The Spring
Cook-Off Weekend was our first campout with Troop 156. My son
had just crossed over to Boy Scouts. The Spring Cook-off is an
annual event. Patrols of Scouts compete against each other and
the Adult Leaders also compete to determine which patrols are the best
cooks.
I must admit, there were a lot of great
meals prepared and served this weekend as you are about to see.
Camp Kiwanis was where we stayed.
It is located between Mason and Williamston, south of I-96 between
Williamston Road and Okemos Road. As we turned onto Williamston Road
from the expressway, I realized I was adding some personal history to my
experience of the weekend. We drove past the house that my mom and dad
brought me home to after I was born over 50 years ago. My first
memories were of the noise of the construction equipment and the people on
them building I-96.
With the Boy Scouts you never know where your journeys will take you.
The Troop had bunk beds to sleep in on
this campout. It was March 30 when we arrived. The next morning,
I realized how serious this cook-off was. We spent a lot of time
cooking the next day and a half, but we ate real good.

The Chef and Chef's Assistant
In between meals, the Boy Scouts worked
on requirements in their books, went on hikes, built fires, and all the
other activities they can do in camp.
